Friday Hoops Roundup: 2/24

Boys Basketball:

No doubt about it, the Iowa City West boys basketball team is one of the greatest rolls this area has seen in years. West is 21-0 heading into the playoffs and don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The Trojans have been consistently led this season by a trio of varsity mainstays: Dondre Alexander, Jeremy Morgan, and Wyatt Lohaus. Alexander (15.9 ppg) and Morgan (15.3 ppg) are being recruited by Division-I programs.

Not to be overshadowed because of West’s success this year is Regina. The Regals are 16-6 going into postseason play and could be a force to be reckoned with. While Regina is coming off of a loss to Mount Vernon a few days ago, that shouldn’t be anything they can’t overcome. Senior guard Ryan Lynch leads the team in scoring at a 16.3 points per game average.

After one of the most illustrious decades in the school’s history, City High has struggled in its last two seasons of play. Seniors Jerel Moore and Cortez Barfield have done most of the heavy lifting for the Little Hawks this season. Maybe a playoff push is in store?

Girls Basketball:

Similar to the boys’ program, the Iowa City West girls basketball team has been rolling all winter. The Women of Troy are 22-1 and favorites to win the state championship. Their last loss was on Jan. 28 against Assumption. Junior Ally Disterhoft (16.9 ppg) has lead the team in scoring all season, and will be highly-recruited prospect come this spring into next fall.

The Regina girls squad was bounced from the playoffs last weekend and finished 18-4. Zoe Dutchik finished the season averaging 17.5 points per game to finish off a productive prep career. She played in the Prime Time League last summer with top-level collegiate players as well.

City High is still alive and has a record of 16-6. Sierra Chambers is leading the team in scoring at a 13.8 points per game average.
