Another week of prep basketball in Iowa City, another week of numerous wins. Here is Johnson County Sports’ first Friday Hoops Roundup, with a little bit of a season summary since this is just the first week of the site.

Boys Basketball:

The Iowa City West boys basketball team is 16-0 overall and 11-0 in the MVC Valley Division. The Trojans don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, and are anchored by juniors Dondre Alexander and Jeremy Morgan. The duo is getting recruited by major Division-I programs. Both for basketball and football. West has a three-game lead in the division over Cedar Falls.

Iowa City High is 6-10 overall and 3-8 within the MVC Valley Division. City High has had its share of struggles this season, but can use this year to build into the future presumably. The Little Hawks are led by seniors Ronald Thompson, Jasper Washington, and Jeremy Johnson.

Regina is 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the Cedar Valley conference. Regals senior guard Ryan Lynch has led his squad for most of the season, as the school is prepared to make a deep run in the state playoffs this season.

Girls Basketball:

The West High girls basketball team is 17-1 overall and 13-0 in the MVC Valley Division. Junior Ally Disterhoft has led the team in scoring numerous times this season, and also paced the team for the majority of last year as a sophomore. Disterhoft has already received a scholarship offer from Iowa State.

City High’s girls are 13-5 and 8-5 in the MVC Valley Division. Head coach Bob McTaggart has led some quality teams in the last few years and the Little Hawks seem to amp up their competition towards the end of the season.

Regina is 17-3 overall and 12-1 in the Cedar Valley conference. The Regals have continued the string of quality girls basketball action in the area this season. Head coach Jeff Wallace is in his sixth year at the helm for Regina.

Friday Hoops Roundup is a weekly feature that will showcase the week that was in area basketball. In the future, it will be primed with more stats, links, and multimedia interaction.

Thank you for visiting Johnson County Sports, a website/blog devoted to covering prep sports in the Iowa City area. This is the first post for JCS, which launched last week, in part, for a University of Iowa Journalism class.

JCS will attempt to cover all three Iowa City high schools — City High, West High, and Regina — with an emphasis on boys and girls basketball. The first live event will be covered within the next two weeks, but content should be posted on a couple times per week basis, at the very least.

In what has become a booming prep sports scene, Iowa City seemingly loves its high school sports. Many distinguished athletes have emerged from these schools and earned Division-I scholarships while others have enjoyed the ride of her or his prep career.

Above all though, these area high school teams have had success. And at a consistent rate.

Take this season, for example. The West High boys and girls basketball teams are rolling right now, and both Regina squads are sure to make some type of a run in the state tournament. The West girls made it to the state finals last season. City High has had some powerhouse teams in the past, too.

So, welcome to JCS. Who knows where this site will go, but hopefully some quality content can be provided to any type of consumer of Iowa City prep sports news.
