The West High girls basketball team defeated City High in a quarterfinal playoff game on Wednesday afternoon, 55-52.

The Women of Troy sealed the win on a blocked 3-point shot shot attempt at the buzzer.

West (23-1) moves on to the semifinals now, and will play Waukee at noon on Friday. West head coach B.J. Mayer’s squad last lost on Jan. 28.

City High was close throughout the entire game, and the fact that they had an opportunity to send the game into OT at the end is a testament to the Little Hawks’ postseason makeup.

The Women of Troy got two big free-throws from Brianna Sturtz within the final 15 seconds of the game, and ultimately City couldn’t overcome that last deficit.

West boys headed to state finals: The boys basketball team is going to state next week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Trojans (23-0) are a 2-seed in a loaded field for Class 4A.

Linn-Mar (Marion) is the defending champ and arguably the favorites to win this season. Marcus Paige – who is heading to North Carolina in the fall — scored 49 points in Linn-Mar’s last playoff game. Yes, 49.

Ankeny is the top seed, and is also 23-0.

West placed fourth at state in 2011.
