This is probably not how City High’s four seniors envisioned their last game at their home court.

On Senior Night, Dubuque Wahlet defeated City 55-46, on Tuesday night in Iowa City. City dropped to a 7-13 record while Wahlert improved to 9-10.

The Little Hawks’ quartet of last-year players — Jeremy Johnson, Jerel Moore, Ronald Thompson, and Cortez Barfield — went out on a loss, as they also combined for just 17 points. Thompson fouled out in the final seconds of the third quarter and Moore fouled out with about two minutes remaining in the game.

The contest was close for a majority of the night, but Wahlert made a push in the fourth quarter to eventually put the game away.

Both squads got off to cold shooting starts, as each team’s shooting percentage was quite low in the first half. Each team played at a solid pace, although City held the ball for the final shot for about a minute at the end of each the first and second quarter.

City utilized a 2-3 zone for most of the game while Wahlert tended to play man-to-man defense. City’s Jerel Moore took advantage of that at times, and finished with 12 points. Moore also had a thunderous breakaway dunk before fouling out in the fourth.

For the Golden Eagles, guard Nate Burks showcased his ability to drive to the basket and hit open shots on the base line. The senior tallied 13 points. Senior Jake May — brother of Iowa’s Eric May — scored 13 points for Wahlert. May was a force inside at the forward position, both offensively and defensively. Riley McCarron, who also quarterbacked Wahlert’s football team, added 6 points and 4 assists.

Aside from Moore, City head coach Adam Loria didn’t get much production from his seniors. Johnson scored 3 points, Thompson had 2, and Barfield was held scoreless.

But it didn’t really matter.

May and Burks led the way for Wahlert in the fourth quarter, and City was not able to hold its opponent on defense.

The Little Hawks’ next game is against Waterloo East on Thursday night in their last game of the regular season.
